Family Involvement

Parent Helping
Parent helping averages twice per month for each family. Parent helpers act as teacher's aides - supervising, reading, writing, interacting, and playing with the children as is needed during the course of each school day. Parent helpers arrive at 8:30 am and stay until all children have been picked up.

Snack and Clean-up
Families rotate snack and clean-up responsibilities for one week at a time. Each family has a snack week three or four times a year. Snacks should be nutritious, low in sugar and salt

School clean-up is done after the snack week, on Saturday or Sunday afternoon. There are two all-parent clean-up/work days during the year, in late August prior to the start of school and again in the early spring.

Monthly Board Meetings
All currently enrolled families are expected to send a representative parent to the monthly meeting. The Board meetings are important vehicles for setting school policies, planning special school activities and events, and for communicating about the current classroom climate. The first half of the meeting is set aside for general business and policy making. The teacher leads the second half of the meeting with a discussion of "Kid Talk." Individual children's needs are addressed in an open format and strategies for working with the class are discussed. This approach ensures consistent teaching patterns between the teacher and parent helpers. Parent education and training is often a part of Kid Talk; parents also lend support and ideas to one another in this forum.

Meetings convene all months except December and August, with special meetings called if necessary. The location usually rotates between the homes of Dragon parents and begin at 7:30 pm. Evenings are chosen that best fit a majority of families and tend to rotate days of the week.

Parent Jobs
In order to maintain the administration of the school (aside from the teacher and accountant there isn't a "support staff") each family is assigned a Job such as Field Trip Coordinator, Handyperson/Recycler, or Fundraiser. Parents are expected to perform these jobs without supervision in an appropriate and timely manner. Of course, questions to the teacher are expected and encouraged. After the new jobs are assigned in the summer, the family currently holding the job will give the new family a more in depth view about their approach to that particular job.
